Metalsmiths manufacture, repair and modify tools and components from ferrous and non-ferrous metals, alloys and sheet metals. They use welding, sheet metalwork and the skills of the blacksmith in their trade. The metalsmith uses patterns, sketches and engineering drawings to fabricate parts and to make items as varied as a simple drop-down barrier to an engine component requiring special heat treatments to give it strength or hardness.
